Asking my american f-listers to answer some questions

I'm doing a little poll for my own information, I'm not trying to create a debate or anything. I just want to have the opinion of the lambda american citizen.

_ I want to know what is your opinion about firearms law in the US. For, against, indifferent ? Why ?

_ In which opinion where you raised in ?

_ Are you democrat or republican ? (to see how --and if -- it match political opinions.)

_ Have you change your mind about it? Why and when ?



IF ONE OF THE QUESTION IS AN ISSUE TO YOU (like, your political allegiance is none of my business) JUST DON'T ANSWER, AND TELL ME YOU DON'T WANT TO ANSWER.

I'm only trying to have a better understanding of the subject, because it is something really alien to the majority of europeans.

the first question... it all depends, in rual places people need guns to protect livestock and their farms, but there is no reason for people to own guns after that.

two, well I never was raised to think either way really....

three, I am actually a little party called Green, but then they never get anything so I just dont have a political standpoint.

My personal preference would be if black powder guns (like the founders had) were the only legal guns (other than for the police etc.)

California liberal democrat raised and I've pretty much stayed that way.

I used to be totally anti hunting but now that I live in the country I can see that some wild populations, like deer, need to be controlled. Here in Virginia hunting season starts with bow hunting, then black powder then modern guns, with the last season being the shortest.

1) Firearms - I can argue both sides, so I guess that makes me indifferent... I think because it is codified in the bill of rights that the right to bear arms (even if it was historically intended only to allow states the right to have their own militias) is important to the american psyche - it symbolizes the freedom to take arms against your oppressor and oppose them. As a city dweller, I'd prefer guns as far away from my fellow citizens as possible. However, Canada has many more guns per capita then the US does, and they have far fewer gun-related violent crimes. So there's something in the american culture that guns are feeding into; it's not just access to them. I don't have a problem with sport-hunting using guns provided (a) the animal hunted is either dangerous or a public nuisance (like deer - which are a problem because we've managed to kill off almost all their predators... :-S) and (b) that the animal is _used_ - for food, or leather, or something. That it isn't wasted. Hunting is one of the major arguments for personal ownership of guns. The other argument I've heard is that if you outlaw guns, the only ones that will have them are outlaws - and there is a very large black-market in guns already...

2) My parents never talked about guns one way or the other. They didn't own any.

4) About firearms? Am not sure I've yet made up my mind on which side of the fence to be :-S
