I will answer to Kendra here, because, I'm sure it will interest others : she asked me if I was going to the Kyoto Costume Institute. First and unfortunately, you can't go to the KCI. The KCI is a costume collection not a museum. The only chance you have to see items from the collection is when they happen to do an exhibition, hosted in a friendly museum. And unfortunately for me, the "Luxury" exhibit they made recently is over. But I will certainly buy the catalog. And I will tell you if it's interesting.
On the other hand, not everything is lost. There is another GREAT costume museum in Japan. The Bunka Gakuen. Remember ?
The one with the crappy website (works with Chrome tonight, you might give it a try) and
the wonderful costumes.
Well they have a permanent exhibit that shall be cool, but they also have a special exhibit :
200 years of European Fashion !! I don't think I will have the right to take pictures, but I hope there will be a catalog. And you will hear from that too :)))))))
