So, wether I will go to the Carnet de Bal event (an Imperial Bal, to "celebrate" the birth of the son of Napoleon III, and that will be feathured in a TV documentary) is still nebulous, the price of this thing being absolutly indecent, but I've already more or less planned how my dress will be, and make a first (successful) toile for my bodice. My greatest concern, was about my fabric : will it do for a ballgow ?

I photoshopped very very quickly (i'm just so numb with photo-editing) something out of the dress that serves as my main reference and so far I'm loving it. What about you ?

Hmm, I actually think the colour might be too dark for a ballgown. It's lovely material, and I think it would be a gorgeous day gown, but considering that the Prince Imperial was born in 1856(?), the ball would most likely still be under candles. That darker colour would fade into the background in a candlelit room so probably wouldn't be the first choice of a Court lady seeking attention/flirtation/praise.

On the other hand, you're on the cusp of the aniline dye craze so you could theoretically go that way and have a gorgeously bright and almost modern-eyes garish gown. :)

You know your French History better than I do ! I hadn't the slightest clue of the birthdate of the imperial Prince before I learn about this event !

Anyway, I don't think they would light up such an event with candle :) So i didn't even consider the matter. And beside, the ask for crinoline, and not for accuratly 1856 crinoline, so I think freedom is allowed, as long as it is period.

But I find your advices very helpful. I think I need trimmings to soften the color.

LOL! Napoleon III's reign (and Eugenie!) is an interest of mine. The reason I mentioned candles was that there wasn't anything else available at the time. Gas lighting had begun to come in, but I've never read anything saying that Napoleon III had allowed his palaces to be lit by them (As a side note, just after this Prince Albert in the UK refused to install gas lighting at Windsor because he preferred candlelight). I totally didn't mean that the Carnet de Bal you were going to would be lit by candlelight! :)
