There’s definitively a light of hope for the Force in this new movie.
Let’s just say to begin with that I didn’t like Episode I, and thought Episode II to be too long, and to have the most unbearable Love scenes ever filmed : hugh !! So I was really afraid of the upcoming movie. The trailers were interesting, but there were too much fights in them, and do I thought the movie will be a long succession of fights. And it isn’t. In fact the fights were better treated than in other movies : shorter and better edited (except for the first space fight, but I won’t quibble on this).
I was a surprised by how much I LOVED it ! There is a taste of original trilogy in it that none of the former episodes have.

First there is that good old R2 back for good, and he has the best scenes of the beginning of the movie. This is the first time I laugh during one of the new trilogy episode (and this one is supposed to be the darkest one – and it is.) and I was not the only one in the theatre. There were also some applause once (Yoda rocks ! Did I say Yoda rocks ?) which is the first time I see it in a French theatre… Fans… :)

Then Hayden Christensen is not too painful and I don’t really ask him more. The (good !) lines he have are enough to show the transformation of Anakin in Vader. I really liked the way they did it, because the evolution is real : you can see it coming slowly. The tactic of Palpatine is impressing, but the scenario is more subtle than you’d think : sometimes Palpatine fails in the idea of Anakin he has, and you realise the guy’s not so easy to turn away. His loyalty to Obi-Wan is greater than in Episode II, which make the treason more interesting ; his interest in the Dark Side of Force is first less for power than by love, etc.

As for Obi-Wan, I’ve read in an interview that Ewan McGregor felt older at the time of the filming of the III than he did at the time of the II, that it was more difficult for him to find the energy to fight, etc., but the truth is that he actually looks a little bit older, which was a surprise. Older (not old, mind !! Obi’s still one of the greatest hotties alive !), wiser, more Alec-Guinessy as a character ; as an actor, there is a I-don’t-care-if-the-film-is-as-bad-as-the-two-former-I-just-do-my-thing attitude that I really like. I wasn’t awaiting such subtlety from Lucas, which definitively leads me to the confirmation of the ghost-writer (whoever he/she is) AND the confirmation of the preponderant part of this assistant of Lucas in charge of the actors. There is a direction of actors this time, Yaheee !!!

The movie also have it’s its surprises (if you haven’t read the scenario before) : for instance, I thought Mace Windu was just killed by Palpatine. In fact, he’s the definitive trial to the Darkness of Anakin. Impressive moment. Also, many things we thought would never be explain are, even via a biased way. The birth of Anakin, without father, the medichlorians thing,… : Siths dealings… The death of Jedi, as we’ve seen it in the original trilogy, is explained by Qui-Gon, sort of… You’ve heard Liam Neeson will be in the movie ? Hee, hee… False joy, sorry.

It doesn’t mean the movie doesn’t have its flaws, surpisingly (if you considered the value of the rest), and most of them concerned Padmé. Nearly all her scenes have been cut out. From a strong women, a powerful, even feared politician, she began a mere housewife, waiting for the return of her knight as the good damsel in distress she’s supposed to be. Bad bad bad. From the character she was, she became a simple idea, the love of Anakin, the death-threatened character for whom he will turn to the Dark Side. In the end, she had nothing to play, and worth than that, you end up not understanding why Anakin would give so much away for THAT ! Also, the cut-scenes are all the scenes about the senators : no more Mon Mothma (I don’t understand the interest of making a Mon Mothma toy when her two scenes are cut !), no more creation of the Rebellion, no more involvement of Bail Organa (which is really stupid, ’cause when he first shows up on screen and suddenly become a first plan character, you’re all “huh ?????!”. Jimmy Smits is eye candy, but it’s not enough.). And also, you have some problems linking the very concerned Senator Padmé one saw during the creation of the Empire, with the babies-bearing fragile little thing. There is even a very interesting aspect of the relation of Padmé and Anakin which disappeared in the move : in the comic, she asks him what he will do if he find out she’s on the other side. Will he turn against her ? Swept away .

All and all, it gives a very interesting idea of what Lucas is thinking of pregnant women !! No more power, no more personality, no more involvement in the story, a constant sick look (what is that fucking make up they give to Natalie Portman ?!! A pregnant woman is suppose to be luminous, no sweat shinny !). So much for feminism…

And last, but not least, for costumes fans… er… don’t expect too much. Peacock ? Cut. Green cloak ? Nearly cut. Leïa buns ? You don’t see it much. Same for Revelation or Senate ones. You have to really love the baby blues ones, because there the only ones you finally really have enough screen time to observe. She doesn’t have lines, she doesn’t have scenes and you only sees her in baby blue nightdresses : poor Padmé…

So, in the end, if you forget Padmé, Lucas finally gives a real STAR WARS movie. It was time !!
