Ode to the nearly dead country

Just watch something on TV about Belgium's problems, and it's so sad, Because it's obviously not going to work anymore. I like Belgium united, but I think that the Flemish opposants bitching is just going to rot the country if it actually don't split up : as it is now, it's sad, and enraging, but there are hints that it's becoming ugly, really ugly.

For instance, in the flemish parts of the country, francophones kids should speak flemish in school, which is normal. But they also have to speak flemish in the schoolyard : if not, they are going to be punished. For speaking their mother language. What's next, they will have to wear a visible mark of their francophonie ? And if you find my analogy too strong, just keep in mind that Flandres has one of the most (if not the most) big, influencial, elected right wing party in the world. And when I say right wing, keep in mind that I say fascistic.

Related, but weird : apparently 54% of the frenchpeople would want to include Wallonie (fracophone part of Belgium) into France if Belgium really split up. Huh.... Independent Wallonie !!!

What is their justification for making them speak Dutch in the schoolyard? I fear we may be having these types of problems soon, because there are so many immigrants from Mexico here.

Problem is, about the language problem, that the Flemish have always been forced to learn French and they have always learned it well. But the French haven't. They get nearly twelve years of Dutch classes in school, yet I have only met a handful of French that do speak it. Flemish have been forced to speak French where they should be able to speak their own language. Now what we have is their reaction to it. They refuse more and more to speak French and obviously this isn't making this better. I have many Flemish friends and they all feel judged and inferior to the French. Some are even afraid. Lot of propaganda going on of course. But from where I'm standing the situation doesn't seem so explosive. And I work at a newspaper! We'll see, maybe things will work out fine.
