To travel... or not

My parents are offering me a travel for my 30th birthday, I choose the destination. Budget is less than 700 euros, so I wave good bye to Tokyo. Problem is that apparently, I should probably wave good bye to New York too : hôtels are too darn expensive !

This may be a little extreme, but the New York Times Frugal Traveler Matt Gross just gave this service a glowing review: AirBnB- http://www.airbnb.com/. They have incredibly reasonable lodging deals in New York but are not traditional hotel accommodations.
I've bookmarked it for the time I ever manage to make it to New York. -sigh-
