Why do I prefer learning japanese through Internet rather than trough books (even if books are great) ? Because Internet always catch up with events. And because when you learn vocabulary on Internet, you can learn how to say this :
ワールドカップの決勝戦でジダンは頭突きをした。
"During the World Cup, Zidane give a headbutt."

Date: 2006-09-05 08:44 am (UTC)From:If you want to speak only, you can go quicker than I do, you will only have to learn grammar, but if you want to read japanese, definitively take your time : there are four alphabets in japanese (one is roman, so no worries !), and each is necessary if you want to read.
One advantage you have is that you have people to help you ! A grand-ma and a parent to speak to on a regular basis will definitly make you have quicker progresses than me :)

Date: 2006-09-05 02:22 pm (UTC)From:I may end up reading as well, or at least trying to! ;) most dictionarys are in the charecters so I think that learning the alphabets would help me there. ;p I can read some of kanji but I by no means can read much else and the grammar is pretty easy (well esp since I'm used to how dad tends to talk, and the little bits of japanese that I know I can figure it all out) but good luck! :D
