Devore as in burn-out or devore as in voided velvet? There's a difference. Voided velvets have been around since, um, the early 16th century. Burnouts are 20th century and are done with acid, two different types of fiber (usually silk and rayon) that have different resistance to the acid.
I'm sorry I can't do the proper accent on the e; my stoopid American keyboard is not very educated. ;P
Sorry for not answering faster : I'm really bad at answering to comments :(
You point out exactly where I was confused : I new I had seen pre-20th century dress with voided velvet, and I was mistaking it with burn-out. But still, it was bizarre, because I was sure there was something about acid and synthetics in the process.
I do recall seeing a Threads Magazine article in the early '90s on how to do your own devore, so I am fairly certain it is late 20th century. There are some very lovely lightweight tissue voided silk velvets from the 20s, but those were woven that way by a handweaver sitting at a specialty loom and were (and still are) fabulously expensive designer goods...

My piece of fabric is of course a burn-out.
Thanks a lot for the precisions !
